 Broadband The first requirement for home working is a fast and reliable internet connection. In Ireland, this could be DSL (broadband via the home phone line), Fixed Wireless (small antenna on the roof with “line-of-sight” to a transmitter on a local high site), Cable (eg UPC), Mobile (O2, 3, Vodafone, Ripwave, Clearwire), or Satellite. VPN Security Homeworking companies normal use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to provide a secure connection from the homeworker’s PC or laptop via the internet to the company’s network. VPNs create secure “tunnels” between the user and company servers using protocols that encapsulate all data sent through internet where the same protocol at the company end de-encapsulates the data.
Telephone Connection / VOIP While some homeworkers use their mobile or their home landline to make calls while working from home, VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) has become very common due to the potentially huge cost savings.
